Boats Backgrounder

Sea Cadets compete in the National Regatta using training boats known as Pirates. The Pirate is a 13-foot double handed boat inspired by the venerable Flying Junior's hull, featuring a modern deck that is ergonomically-shaped for comfortable hiking and a cockpit designed to come up dry after a capsize. The Pirate may be used as a basic club training boat, or it can be equipped with optional spinnaker and trapeze for more advanced sailing.

A spinnaker is a parachute-like sail, often brightly coloured, which is supported by a pole to windward. It may only be utilized when sailing downwind or on a reach.

A trapeze enables the crew to extend their weight as far outboard as possible by suspending themselves from a wire attached to the top of the mast
