Along with the sailing venue, Kingston offers much in the way of activities and sights to see. The city of Kingston Tourist Info offers cadets and coaches the opportunity to learn more about the city before their arrival.
Kingston is a city with a rich history and participants will have the opportunity to tour Old Fort Henry. It has a great scenic view, a performing military marching band and daily tours. The Marine Museum of the Great Lakes is comprised of exhibits, galleries and a blacksmith shop and boats a Shipyard Drydock.
The Royal Military College is also located in Kingston. It is a military university to educate and train future leaders for the Canadian Forces. In fulfilling this role the College provides a university education unique in Canada, and perhaps in the world today. RMC is now over one hundred years old. It was established by an act of the Canadian Parliament in 1874 and on June 1, 1876, the Military College of Canada opened its doors to the first class of eighteen gentlemen cadets.
Kingston is also home to Queen's University, which boasts over 13,000 full-time students from over 80 countries and every province in Canada. Cadets and staff participating in the National Regatta will housed at Queen's University during their stay in Kingston.
The Canadian Yachting Association, better known as CYA, will be providing a Youth Olympic Training Seminar (YOTS) for cadets at the Regatta. CYA sponsors regattas across the country and is an active member of the Canadian Safe Boating Council. Canadian Olympic-training Regatta, Kingston (CORK), is a two-week long event, hosting over 20 classes and drawing more than 1000 sailboats, 2000 competitors and coaches from many countries as well as over 10,000 tourists and site-seers. The National Regatta will be sailed right alongside CORK. The Kingston Yacht Club is of interest to participants as it is the premier boating club in Eastern Ontario and the Thousand Islands.
The Canadian Coast Guard will also be involved in the National Regatta. The Office of Boating Safety (OBS) will make a presentation to the participants. OBS works closely with communities to deliver prevention-based programs to reduce the safety risks and environmental impacts of boating across all waters of Canada. Another site of interest to sailors is the Ontario Sailing Association. OSA operates a series of mobile sailing schools called BOOM for both adults and youth and Member Clubs and Sailing Schools also offer programs at their facilities.
